A workshop on making your own natural inks from kitchen ingredients, food waste and flowers.

Inks are one of the oldest known media for writing and sharing ideas and for making art, across the world. In this workshop, you'll learn how to make inks the natural way, using things that are easily available around you (even during lockdown!).


WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • How to make inks using kitchen waste and botanicals
  • How to make and use inks for drawing, painting and calligraphy
  • How to make your own twig pen
  • How to preserve your natural inks
  • How to play with the chemistry of colour to create a colour palette
  • Specific inks covered: black, walnut ink, turmeric ink, botanical inks, and guidelines for processing various natural substances into inks

MATERIAL NEEDED
  • 5-6 sheets of watercolour paper
  • 1-2 paint brushes
  • 3 mixing bowls
  • 1 plate/ colour palette for mixing colours
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • 2 lemons
  • Stainless steel vessel with lid (spare, not to be used for cooking)
  • Heat source - gas stove/ induction stove
  • 3-4 spoons
  • A twig
  • A knife

    ABOUT THE CREATOR

    Manya Cherabuddi

    Manya Cherabuddi is a natural colour artist and educator who loves all things art, design and nature. Her aim is to make people fall in love with natural colours. 

    Manya has taught 3000+ people about natural dyes and natural colours, including school children, fashion designers, design students, researchers and artisans. Manya has also held sessions for companies such as Ralph Lauren, NetApp and Atlassian, to create awareness of how to use natural colours in everyday life.

    Apart from hand-dyeing fabrics herself, she also works with designers, artisans and weavers to help them switch to natural dyes. She undertakes colour research and enjoys experimenting with new materials and techniques.

    Under her brand Treehouse, Manya makes naturally dyed textiles, accessories, baby wear and personalized, handcrafted gifts.
